Clare Woods features in 'The Sleepers'
‘The Sleepers’ brings together paintings by Clare Woods and sculptures by Des Hughes, made in response to Pallant House Gallery’s collection and the Arundel Tomb in Chichester Cathedral. The presentation explores the creative relationship between the married couple, as well as the continuing relevance of artists, such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Graham Sutherland on contemporary art today.
This exhibition includes a large painting by Woods named Lady Midnight (2015), which is based on a found black and white photograph of a surrealist dancer. Discussing this work, Woods explains she was drawn to the idea that "when you look at a bronze by Arp or Brancusi you have to move around it, spend time with it, you have to think about the weight in a way that is completely different to ‘flat’ imagery; a concept that poses questions and difficulties for a painter".
