Melvin Edwards is featured in 'Rethinking Monuments'
'Rethinking Monuments: American Sculpture in its Time, 1850 – 2000' explores the development of the artists' relationship to the monument, its communication of narrative, and in turn the viewer's perception of these. The works featured range in size and medium, and are found both in the home and on city streets.
The group exhibition highlights works from the collections of four Michigan museums that trace the history of American sculpture and allow for the renogotiation of the histories, ideas and legacies that they embody. Artists in the exhibition include Alexander Calder, Melvin Edwards, Richard Hunt, Harriet Frishmuth, Paul Manship, Claes Oldenburg, and Hiram Powers, among others.
