Yinka Shonibare CBE RA is included in 'A Gateway to Possible Worlds: Art & Science Fiction’
Overview
‘A Gateway To Possible Worlds’ brings together over 200 works from the late 1960s to the present day. The exhibition pays tribute to critical and socially committed science fiction that emerged on the fringes of the hippie protest movements and responds to the challenges of our immediate future, exploring philosophical, psychological, political, societal and ecological themes.
The show explores the world of science fiction as an expression of the present and a complex tool for understanding the future, which it helps to construct and predict. Alexandra Müller, the exhibition’s curator explains: ‘I do not think of science fiction as a genre, but as a method of thinking – of taking nothing for granted and affirming that we are not condemned to perpetuate the status quo.’
