Kendell Geers features in 'The Circus We Are'
Group presentation ‘The Circus We Are’ explores the influence of the circus world on art. Situating imagery of clowns, merry-go-rounds, fairground games and tightrope walkers alongside contemporary artworks, the exhibition poses the question ‘Are we in the circus?’.
The presentation includes ‘Masked Ball’, 2002 by Kendell Geers, a satirical work that combines a football with a latex mask of then Italian President, Silvio Berlusconi. Geers' visual vocabulary is characterised by provocation, humour, and violence. The use of found objects such as the balls and masks included in this work, or of barbed wire, neon lights, or glass shards, reveals the crucial role of ready-mades in his work.
Featured artists include: Carlos Aires, Homa Arkani, Uldus Bakhtiozina, Frans De Vos, Dodi Espinosa, Kendell Geers, Taus Makhacheva, Fabien Mérelle, Joan Muyle, Daniele Puppi, Erwin Olaf, Hans Op de Beeck and Santiago Ydañez, as well as a large selection of related objects and posters from the 19th and 20th centuries.
