Deborah Roberts features in ‘New Arrivals’
Presenting a broad showcase of the most recent acquisitions at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, 'New Arrivals' includes 'Head nods and handshakes', 2019 by Deborah Roberts.
Made up of layered photograph fragments and mixed media details, 'Head nods and handshakes' engages with a spectrum of Black visual identity. Like much of Roberts' work, the piece explores young Black identity and how societal racism intersects with childhood innocence. Her collaged children embody a sense of vulnerability or naive strength, and navigate the complicated narratives of American, African American and art history.
Other artists featured include: Damien Hirst, Jenny Saville, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Oskar Kokoschka, John Bellany, Marie Harnett and Pablo Picasso.
