Kehinde Wiley wins Apollo 'Artist of the Year Award'
Kehinde Wiley is the recipient of Apollo’s Artist of the Year Award 2021 in advance of his exhibition ‘The Prelude' at The National Gallery opening 10 December 2021.
This year Kehinde Wiley was commissioned by The Huntington Library to respond to Thomas Gainsborough’s ‘The Blue Boy’ and his ‘Portrait of Melissa Thompson’ was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Wiley’s vibrant and highly naturalistic paintings of contemporary African-American and African-Diasporic men and women subvert the hierarchies and conventions of classical portraiture.
Since their launch in 1992, Apollo's annual celebration of achievements in the art and museum world commends remarkable work by individuals and institutions in both historical and contemporary fields.
