Yinka Shonibare CBE RA features in Expo2020 Dubai
Eleven leading artists have created artworks for public spaces across the site of Expo2020 Dubai that will become landmarks of a new, permanent district. Curated by Tarek Abou El Fetouh, the project takes its inspiration from the famous Arab mathematician, astronomer, and physicist Ibn al-Haytham’s seminal work, ‘Book of Optics’. Positioned to create a narrative of concepts, ideas and aesthetics, the works form a creative journey that set the tone for the site of Expo 2020, encouraging innovative thinking and imagination.
The landmark artworks have been created by leading local, regional and international artists including Hamra Abbas, Asma Belhamar, Afra Al Dhaheri, Olafur Eliasson, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Shaikha Al Mazrou, Khalil Rabah, Abdullah Al Saadi, Yinka Shonibare CBE and Haegue Yang. Yinka Shonibare CBE's commission for the project, ‘Wind Sculpture III’ manifests as a three-dimensional, hand-painted piece of fabric, its billowing surface resembling a ship’s sail in the breeze.
