Caroline Walker: Home
Art Exchange in Colchester presents ‘Home’ by Caroline Walker, a Kettle’s Yard touring solo exhibition co-presented with the University of Essex’s Centre for Migration Studies. The exhibition features a series of paintings, created in collaboration with the charity ‘Women for Refugee Women’ which feature women living in temporary accommodation who the artist met and photographed, before making paintings of each in her studio.
The artworks show women alone within domestic spaces, a subject that Walker often paints. Isolated and intimate, the works depict women overlooked by society at large, offering the viewer a less familiar portrayal of the refugee crisis. Walker says: “The collaboration with Women for Refugee Women has been transformative to my practice, first and foremost because it has led me to engage with the women I’m painting on a personal and specific level, to make paintings which take their individual lives as a starting point.”
