Melvin Edwards features in 'Nasher Mixtape'
'Nasher Mixtape' is a group exhibition compiled of 'tracks', micro-exhibitions focused on the Nasher’s permanent collection installed throughout the museum. Curated by Catherine Craft, each 'track' contains further content including interviews with artists, inspiration playlists, and insights from curators, educators, and living artists to accompany the exhibition.
Alongside works by Joan Miró, David Smith, Martin Puryear, and Nancy Grossman recent acquisitions are featured together with historical works on public display for the first time. 'Nasher Mixtape' showcases important new additions to the Nasher collection including works by Judy Chicago, Melvin Edwards, Maren Hassinger, and Nicole Eisenman.
Featuring in 'Track 6: Now We Know’ Melvin Edwards’ works are presented in various formats, including large-scale installations and public sculpture, which featured in the Nasher Sculpture Center’s 2015 traveling retrospective ‘Melvin Edwards: Five Decades’ and its accompanying publication. In 2020 Edwards made a generous gift to the museum of four sculptures and two drawings that represent a spectrum of the artist’s concerns, methods of working, materials, and themes. These include an example of the artist's rocker series of kinetic sculptures, 'Five to the Bar', 1973; two 'Lynch Fragments', 'Now We Know, 1979 and 'Iraq', 2003 as well as the wall-based sculpture 'Beyond Cabo Verde', 2006 and a work on paper from the early 1970s.
