'Judder Shudder: Act II' by Jonathan Baldock and Florence Peake
Kunsthall Stavanger invites you to a special performance with British artists Jonathan Baldock and Florence Peake. The performance will be followed by a conversation between Baldock and Adam Smythe, Curator at Bluecoat. The project is a collaboration with Bluecoat in Liverpool.
Performed in the galleries of Tate St Ives in April this year, Judder Shudder: Act II (2018) combines costume and sculpture by Jonathan Baldock that will be animated and performed in together with artist/choreographer Florence Peake. Taking inspiration from the theatricality of Barbara Hepworth’s wheeled plinths in her studio at the Palais de Danse (St Ives) the performance blurs sculpture, costume and performer to create an act of absurd ritualism, at once humorous and tense, light and dark.
Jonathan Baldock was born in 1980 in the UK. Florence Peake’s practice encompasses visual art, dance and performance. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally; Performance and installation work RITE: On this pliant body we slip our WOW! has toured to Palais de Tokyo, De La Warr Pavilion and SITE gallery 2018. RITE solo show at Studio Leigh 2017. Solo performance piece Voicings has toured to Sara Zanin Gallery Rome, 2017 the Serpentine Gallery, Mysterical day 2016, Somerset House for Block Universe performance festival. The Keeners Solo show at SPACE 2015, Hall of the swell Gallery Lejeune 2015, The BALTIC, Newcastle ensemble piece MAKE; Hayward Gallery- a 3 month performance installation as part of the Mirrorcity show, National Portrait Gallery, performing group work Paper Portraits. Commissions from; Whitechapel Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Modern Art Oxford; Chapter Arts, Cardiff, Harris Museum, Preston, David Roberts Art Foundation. Peake is the recipient of the Jerwood Choreographic Research project 2016.
