MassArt's Bakalar & Paine Galleries present 'Legacy of the Cool: A Tribute to Barkley L. Hendricks'. This exhibition is a tribute to artist Barkley L. Hendricks' legacy and a celebration of new generations of figurative artists of color.
This group show features the work of 24 artists: Elia Alba, James Brooks, Taha Clayton, Delphine Diallo, Nona Faustine, Kris Graves, Barkley L. Hendricks, Ekua Holmes '77, Tomashi Jackson, Rashid Johnson, Simone Leigh, Nate Lewis, Steve Locke M'01, Brianna McCarthy, Ari Montford, Zanele Muholi, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Deborah Roberts, Curtis Talwst Santiago, Amy Sherald, Xaviera Simmons, Tiffany Smith, Shawn Theodore, Hank Willis Thomas, and Keith Morris Washington '93.
Many of these artists work in the same spirit as Hendricks and portray themselves; their friends, families, and communities; and the complexities of their lives in captivating and thought-provoking images. Through varied media and diverse approaches, they chronicle the present moment and their work often questions dominant cultural narratives and addresses important contemporary issues.
