Hulda Guzmán: Miracle Fruits
Overview
Hulda Guzmán's first major instituional solo show Miracle Fruits takes place at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. This major exhibition, curated by Amanda Carneiro, will feature eight new paintings alongside a selection of loaned works from museums and collectors.
Miracle Fruits explores the artist's profound relationship with, and contribution to the Impressionist landscape genre.
Guzmán is renowned for her portrayal of the tropical Caribbean surroundings she resides in. Through painting, she explores planes, perspectives and realities populated by a technicolor cast of humans, animals, anthropomorphic plants and imaginary creatures. The works in this show blend rich landscapes with architectural features, magical realism and Mexican muralism.
The narratives in Guzmáns paintings occupy contradictory and dreamlike realities. Characters relax on paradisiacal beaches next to abandoned apartments, dance on dance floors that extend to the rainforest and chase demons through elegant interiors. Miracle Fruits exemplifies the artist's interest in erotic scenes amidst a nature impacted by abstraction and modernist architecture.
A forthcoming monograph will be published by the museum on the occasion of the exhibition.
