Jaune Quick-to-See Smith features in 'Power of the People'
Organised against the backdrop of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Power of the People: Art and Democracy presents diverse perspectives on democracy through 180 works of art across all media.
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's mixed media piece Tribal Map recalls the vibrant maps of the United States that hang in elementary school classrooms. Only here, the borders drip and bleed together, suggesting a melting of boundaries. State names are replaced with those of Native communities, while others reflect those displaced due to colonial expansion. The work urges viewers to acknowledge the peoples whose histories on this land extend to time immemorial, and highlights the systemic barriers that continue to hinder full democratic participation for many communities.
