Jaune Quick-to-See Smith features in 'Art for a New Understanding'
Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now showcases 40 Indigenous artists from the United States and Canada. The exhibition aims to reshape the understanding of contemporary art by highlighting Indigenous practices that have often been overlooked in the art canon.
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's Trade (Gifts for Trading Land with White People) was created in response to the 500th-anniversary commemoration of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. The piece features an inscribed image of a canoe layered with newspaper clippings and photographs of Native people. Smith draws a stark contrast between authentic Indigenous culture and the widespread commercialisation and appropriation of Native American symbols.
Featured artists include Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Anita Fields, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Fritz Scholder, Kay Walking Stick, Shan Goshorn, Spiderwoman Theater, and T.C. Cannon.
