Izumi Kato features in 'Ukiyo-e in Play'
Izumi Kato takes part in Ukiyo-e in Play, an exhibition celebrating the traditions of woodcut prints and their re-working by a network of artists, designers, and creators.
The technique of Japanese woodblock printing developed independently within the culture of the Edo period, giving birth to the vibrant and gorgeous art of ukiyo-e. The word "ukiyo" means "of the present era," and ukiyo-e prints were a medium that vividly reflected the era and society of that time.
This exhibition presents contemporary ukiyo-e works created by artists, designers, and creators from a variety of genres who have been fascinated by the expressionism of traditional woodblock prints and who have become contemporary artists in collaboration with Japanese carvers and printers.
