Kehinde Wiley features in 'Flowers. Art from the Renaissance to Augmented Reality'
Kehinde Wiley showcases his portrait Margaret Woffington, 2017 in the exhibition Flowers. Art from the Renaissance to Augmented Reality.
The show demonstrates how flowers have been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists throughout history.
Amongst the contemporary artists featured, Wiley offers a bold and vibrant interpretation of the floral theme. Inspired by Jean-Baptiste van Loo’s painting Margaret ('Peg') Woffington, ca. 1738, Wiley's exhibited work is a tender and sensual composition. Wiley creates a pronounced cultural juxtaposition by including a lavish William Morris pattern in the background. The combination of this decorative surface and Wiley’s hyper-real figures creates a tension that activates the painting.
Participating artists include Kehinde Wiley, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Girolamo Pini, Ai Weiwei, Kapwani Kiwanga, Miguel Chevalier and Rebecca Louise Law.
Curated by Franziska Stöhr and Roger Diederen, in collaboration with Suzanne Landau, the exhibition presents five centuries of art, culture, and innovation.
