Yinka Shonibare CBE RA: 2024 PSSA Marsh Award

Yinka Shonibare CBE RA's sculpture, Hibiscus Rising, has been shortlisted for the 2024 PSSA Marsh Award for excellence in public sculpture.

Hibiscus Rising, 2023, was commissioned in memory of David Oluwale, a homeless British Nigerian, who drowned in the River Aire in suspicious circumstances. The memorial serves as both a celebration of Leeds’ vibrant diversity and a reflection of its troubled past. While recognising the tragic events that led to Oluwale’s death in 1969, Shonibare chose to create a piece that looks toward healing and unity rather than division.

Drawing from his Nigerian roots and childhood memories, Shonibare used the hibiscus flower as a central motif, symbolising beauty, love, empathy, and passion. His intention was to honour Oluwale’s legacy in a way that uplifts the community and fosters a sense of hope.
