Yinka Shonibare CBE RA features in 'True Colours'

Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague, Netherlands

Yinka Shonibare CBE RA features in the group show True Colours, which explores the meaning of colour in relation to form, identity and society. The exhibition features work by more than sixty artists worldwide, from different generations and disciplines. Young international talents exhibit with renowned artists, complimenting one another in tone, texture, process and form.

Work from the AkzoNobel Art Foundation by Steven Aalders, Yael Bartana, Ann Veronica Janssens, Emma Talbot, Alan Uglow, Marthe Wéry and others will enter into a dialogue with work from Kunstmuseum Den Haag’s collection by Donald Judd, Sarah Lucas, Piet Mondrian, Bridget Riley, Charley Toorop and others. An important pillar in the collection of the AkzoNobel Art Foundation and in that of the Kunstmuseum is 'la condition humaine'; the essence of being human, and the quest for identity.

Revolution Kid (Calf) is part of a series of childlike figures made by Shonibarein 2011 and 2012 in response to the proliferation of revolutions and uprisings across the globe. Shonibare’s figure adopts a similar pose to the child in Eugène Delacroix's painting, ‘Liberty Leading the People’, commemorating the July Revolution of 1830 which toppled King Charles X of France. The figure also brandishes a golden gun, like the Browning Hi Power pistol found on the body Muammar Gaddafi when he was captured and killed in Libya in 2011.
