'Unearthed' (working title) by Jim Hodges at Grace Cathedral
'Unearthed' (working title) is a monumental, bronze cast of an uprooted tree stump by artist Jim Hodges that will be in residence at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral from April 22 to September 8, 2019. During this transitional period, the sculpture will exist in a state of refinement as it absorbs the prayerful energy generated by the faithful gathered in worship.
To coincide with the work's interlude at the church, a series of musical performances and a public reading have been organised that echo the varied themes that resonate with the sculpture. This programme has been organised by Jim Hodges Studio in conjunction with Grace Cathedral.

Adam Tendler is a leading presence in contemporary music and the 2019 recipient of the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Tendler will present a program exploring themes of protest, meditation, queer rage, religiosity and the natural world through musical works by John Cage, Arvo Pärt, Joan La Barbara, James MacMillan, Olivier Messiaen, and Frederic Rzewski's 1992 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's De Profundis for speaking pianist.

Susan Griffin, 'Not Just One'

Bennington, A Vocal Ensemble

In celebration of Jim Hodges' artwork, 'Unearthed', on view at the cathedral through September 8, the vocal ensemble Bennington will perform: Tom Bogdan, Michael Chinworth, Liam Dailey, Dane Whitman and special guest Randall Wong.
Jim Hodges previously invited the group to perform at the opening of his 2016 exhibition at Gladstone Gallery, New York, and later at Hodges' New York performance space Queenslab.

Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys
Sunday 8 September, 3pm
Since its founding as an institution in 1906, Grace Cathedral has hosted a men's choir, later adding boys' voices to the Choir in 1913. Since then, the centuries-old Anglican tradition of a men and boys' choir has blossomed at the cathedral as one of a handful of such choirs still performing in the United States. The Choir has been invited to share their music internationally in cathedrals across Europe.
