Sarah Ball features in 'X Collection 202: Portrait of a Man'
X Museum presents their third collection exhibition, titled Portrait of a Man, featuring male figures created by 61 international contemporary artists in recent years. The group show includes painting, sculpture, and photography, alongside relevant research materials, publications, and videos, providing a concise overview of the techniques and concepts contemporary artists use today.
Departing from a historical review of male portraiture, Portrait of a Man delves into the complexities and multifaceted implications of male image and identity, and explores how contemporary artists learn and unlearn from the past.
“Portrait of a Man” is a common title in countless male portraits throughout art history. In these works, figures are anonymous, their specific identities often went unnoticed or unrecorded, hidden behind this generic title. In these works, the details of their faces and bodies are externalised through their expressions, postures, costumes and subtle interactions between multiple figures. These elements embody the social lifestyles of that time. Through this classic theme and title, the exhibition attempts to reveal the enduring significance of portraiture today, and revisits the memory and expectations associated with male representation.
Exhibiting artists include Sarah Ball, Trey Abdella, Felipe Baeza, Hernan Bas, Alexander Basil, William Brickel, Dominic Chambers, Jean Claracq, Henry Curchod, dagou, Oh de Laval, Leonardo Devito, Fan Yang-tsung, Alex Gardner, Roberto Gil de Montes, Gongkan, Caleb Hahne Quintana, Faris Heizer, Killion Huang, Morteza Khakshoor, Heesoo Kim, Vojtěch Kovařík, Antonio Obá, Tan Yongqing, Tian Jianxin, Issy Wood, Mayuka Yamamoto and Yang Bodu.
