Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present works by Mamma Andersson, Stephan Balkenhol and Andreas Eriksson for NOMAD St Moritz 2021. Set in Chesa Planta, a historic mansion in Samedan within the heart of the Swiss Alps, the exhibition explores reflections of nature in classical sculpture, painting and tapestry.
In collaboration with Tobias Vernon’s London design gallery, 8 Holland Street, a selection of international contemporary art is presented alongside European 20th century furniture and Scandinavian textiles. This is a continuation of an ongoing series of pop-up exhibitions exploring the symbiotic dialogue between artists and designers and how their work complements our everyday lives.
Included in the presentation are paintings by Swedish artist Mamma Andersson who is renowned for her depictions of serene landscapes, Nordic figurative painting and folk art. Her compositions are often dreamlike and expressive. Andersson’s evocative use of pictorial space and her juxtapositions of thick paint and textured washes are uniquely her own.
Also on view is a sculpture by German artist Stephan Balkenhol inspired by classical marble statues. Carved and chiselled from wawa wood, the surface remains a document to Balkenhol's process exposing the trace of his tools. Also visible are knots, grain and cracks in the texture of the wood. Liberated from the moral, political and aesthetic precepts that typically shape depictions of the human form, this figure reveals instead what the artist describes as a “wooden mirror” for the viewer’s imagination.
Another highlight of the exhibition are naturalistic tapestries and paintings of Swedish artist, Andreas Eriksson. Eriksson’s subtle and meditative works feature earthy tones which evoke the environment. Balanced between abstraction and figuration, the artist uses softly applied gestural brushstrokes that echo the nuanced mood of the natural landscape and the passage of time.
The presentation coincides with a pop-up exhibition featuring works by Andersson and Eriksson, hosted by gallery 107 S-chanf, in St. Mortiz, Switzerland, over July and August.
