In Real Life: Art Basel Miami Beach
Overview
For Art Basel Miami Beach Online Viewing Rooms, Stephen Friedman Gallery’s presentation ‘In Real Life’ focuses on figuration and depictions of the human form through painting, sculpture and works on paper.
‘In Real Life’ is also physically presented at Stephen Friedman Gallery in Galleries 1 and 2 during Art Basel Miami Beach from 23 November 2020 until 4 January 2021. This provides a unique opportunity for collectors and the public to view works from the fair in ‘real time’.
This marks the first time the gallery has exhibited Sarah Ball’s work since announcing representation of the British artist in November. Ball’s meticulously rendered portraits explore themes of gender and identity. Demonstrating an acute sensitivity to the psyche of her subjects, the artist emphasises physical characteristics that define how we outwardly portray ourselves to the world. Often depicting people who celebrate self-expression and contest traditional binary norms, Ball highlights physiognomy, hairstyles, clothes, jewellery and make-up that reveal the idiosyncrasies of her anonymous, often unknowing sitters.
Other highlights of the physical presentation include a new painting by British-Grenadian artist Denzil Forrester that invites us into one of his trademark nightclub scenes, coinciding with his current mid-career survey at Spike Island in Bristol; a recent, meticulously crosshatched painting by Wayne Gonzales which continues his exploration of the contemporary American landscape; a new sculpture by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE based on a marble statue of Poseidon from the Hellenistic era, ahead of his forthcoming retrospective at Museum der Moderne, Salzburg in March 2021; and a new group of unique works on paper by David Shrigley which capture the British artist's signature, quick-witted style.
